What a Denver Sedation Dentist Might Tell You About the Different Sedatives They Can Use

There are 3 types of sedation in dentistry, either on the basis of inhalation of a mild analgesic gas (known as “laughing gas”) or by intravenous injection of sedative substances:
Inhalosedation
It involves the
inhalation of a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen - a mild analgesic gas. It is the most
common dentistry sedation method, being safely and successfully administered
through a special mask that attaches tightly to the nose. The patient does not
sleep (as is mistakenly believed!), but feels very relaxed and can cooperate
with the dentist. It is used by many dentists like Clarkson Dental of Denverand other sedation dentistry offices.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes this technique as very safe and effective, being recommended for sedating children during dental treatments.
Analgo-sedation (IV sedation)
This is a type of sedation performed by intravenous injection of substances with a sedative character, which induces a controlled decrease in the state of consciousness, allowing anxious patients to relax and tolerate dental procedures, while maintaining the control of their cardio-respiratory function.
Deep sedation
This form of sedation is rarely used in dentistry, typically on non-cooperative patients with mental issues, in order for the dentist to be able to perform the dental treatments they need in the best conditions of safety and comfort. Patients will sleep throughout the intervention and will be carefully monitored.
